Octomom

I don't know if I mentioned it on this blog before, but a few months ago, we decided to become pet owners. Dallin has really been into all things fish and fishing and he headed a mass effort in allowance collaboration and extra chores to realize this little idea. Peter and I thought it was about time to have a pet, and fish seem pretty easy compared to a dog. Although we were not super excited, we went along with it and offered to chip in a share of the cost. When the day finally came, we all headed over the the pet store. Amidst the chaos of toting so many excited and busy little people into a pet store we managed to come out with a 15 gallon tank and appropriate decor for said kids: Photobucket
We got all set up and then a couple of days later, we bought our first fish. 5 of them to start, plus a little aquarium frog.  We quickly realized that maintaining an optimal water environment was much trickier than we expected.  We lost a few fish and the frog did not seem to be doing very well. We found out that the frog need to eat blood worms, which we hurried to the store to buy, hoping to save him.  That was gross.  I did not like dealing with blood worms.  And then the frog went missing completely.  Apparently they are known to jump ship.  We never did find him.   We learned more about how to keep things healthy and balanced and bought more fish.

Surprisingly, we have really enjoyed having fish.  It hasn't been something to be excited about and easily forgotten once obtained.  We have all spent a lot of time sitting and watching aquarium life in action. It is amazing how 20 minutes can go by when watching. We have learned how to vacuum out the fish poop, which I actually don't mind doing.  Other than that, Dallin feeds them a pinch of food each day and life is pretty happy in there.

One day Dallin said that there was a baby fish in the coral. Sure that he was mistaken I went to look and sure enough there was a little fish so small, that you could easily miss it.  After further examination we found another and then another!

We don't know how this came to be, other than we know we bought a female guppy shortly before this happened.  BUT the fish look like our orange fish that is in there.  Is is possible that they could have cross bread?  We don't know how it happened, but that there are definitely babies.

We continued to try to count.  We once thought we counted 9, but finally, when cleaning the tank and taking all the stuff out, saw that there were for sure 8 fish babies. We already had 5 mature fish.

Now the fish tank is even more fun to watch.  Those babies are hard to count since they are always on the move, but one can't help but try.  We really like our fish babies, although we don't quite know what to make of it still.  What will become of our smallish tank as these fish get bigger and breed???  We definitely don't know what the future holds with that situation.

So, like Scarlett O'hara, we will "Think about that tomorrow."
